News is information about current events.

Strategy

News is information about current events.

There are a couple categories of news that I am interested in:

  1. Breaking: high priority factual information
  2. Intraday: business as usual events
  3. Reports: longer-form post-hoc analysis on some topic

Breaking

Breaking news might be the sector of news with the least epistemic integrity for a couple reasons:

  1. Sensationalism
  2. Lack of high quality data (relevant The Onion clip)

Therefore, a source with extremely high reliability and clarity with regard to observations is required.

My choice in this category is Reuters’ mobile app. You can enable push notifications for breaking news specifically. Additionally, their front page (both app and web) typically display high priority information.

Reuters has strict principles to maintain its independence, lack of bias, and lack of sensationalism. Their writing style is unlike almost all other news agencies; it is extremely concise, clear about observations, and on-topic. Articles are short. The only other agency that compares in this way is AP, but my personal taste favors Reuters (I think mostly because AP has more “fluff” articles on their website).

Intraday

Lower priority intraday news doesn’t have as many epistemic issues compared to breaking, but you still want clarity with regard to observations.

My choice for this category is threefold:

  1. Reuters again. The category links at the top of their website are fantastic. Additionally, they have a YouTube channel which posts 1-3 minute videos of a mix of news.

  2. The r/anime_titties subreddit (the namesake is for historical reasons, it is actually a geopolitical news subreddit). The submission rules are decent and the posts are generally varied and good quality.
